The Government has blocked nearly 32 websites as they were carrying Jihadi propaganda and were promoting anti India content.
According to the reports, the URL’s were blocked by Indian Telecom department on the advice of the Anti-terrorism Squad. Some of the web sites were using specifically using social media as a weapon to attract the Indian youth to Jihadi activity.
The procedures were taken to unblock the sites such as weebly.com, vimeo.com, dailymotion.com and gist.github.com, mentioned in a state from Ministry of Communication and Information Technology. In a statement, the Department of Telecom said that 32 URLs have been blocked under Section 69 of the Information Technology Act, 2000, and under Information Technology (Procedure and Safeguards for Blocking for Access of Information by Public) Rules, 2009.
The rules state that the central Government has the power to block the content if it is against the country’s interest of the sovereignty and integrity of the country defence of India, security of the state, friendly relations with foreign states or public order or for preventing incitement to the commission of any cognizable offence.
Show case notice have been issued to the web sites but only six websites have replied to the notice sent by the central government.
