Women and Temples: EIC Outrage

Women, in India are considered incarnations of Goddess Lakshmi, Parvati and Saraswati. But what happens to this thinking in India, when a women wants to pray while on her periods? Why is a woman considered impure during the days when her body goes through a normal biological process which is responsible for her to conceive and make babies?

People in India, especially temples are very insecure about women entering temples, viz., Sabrimala Temple, where the temple authorities were in a fix when they announced that they will let women enter the temple only when a machine is invented that will detect whether they are eligible to enter the temple or not- aka- whether they are on their periods or are “pure”- This statement roused the anger of millions of women not only in India, but also raised the eye-brows of media internationally. Similarly, in Shani-shingnapur Temple, after a woman entered the temple and touched the lord, the whole temple was “purified” the next day.  Such is not the case only in Temples, even in Haji Ali Dargah, women are not allowed in the inner sanctum of the dargah.

These are just the tip of dung heap of such incidents in India- when are these people going to evolve these age-old traditions- which incidentally were started ONLY to let menstruating women get adequate REST on such days- It’s time to evolve and throw these narrow thinking out of the window.

Watch, Sapan Verma’s outrage on this EIC Outrage on why Women aren’t allowed to pray in these temples.
