Churches, the religious place where we see the beautiful fusion of religion, peace and art – which being similar to each other, as yet so very unusually different. Here is a list of such unusual churches from across the world, that should be on the bucket list of travel.
1. Avarua Church, Cook Islands
The whitewashed coral churches, by the sea, are a beauty to behold.
2. Church of Intercession on the Nerl, Russia
The white stone church was built to commemorate his victory over the Bulgars and to mourn the loss of his son in the same battle. It’s built on the confluence of the Nerl and Klyazma rivers.
3. Gougane Barra Church, Ireland
Gougane Barra Church is on the west of Macroom in Kenmore Bay in County Cork, Ireland, built on the site of an ancient monastery built by Saint Finbarr in the 6th century.
4. Jukkasjärvi Kyrk, Sweden
The oldest church in Swedish Lapland, built in 1607, it is notable for fusion of Christianity and traditional Sami beliefs. There is also a striking mural, depicting the coming together of Christian and Sami traditions, and an organ made up of reindeer horn and birch. It is said that there are two mummified bodies under the floorboards belonging to the 18th century.
5. St Carthage, Silverton, Australia
This Catholic church, in the abandoned town of Silverton in outback of New South Wales, has unnerving about its position on the edge of the vast plain.
6. Yosemite Valley Chapel, USA
AKA Man’s Church and/ or God’s Church, the Yosemite Chapel, is seen in the Yosemite National Park, California- being the oldest public structure in the park, it has the best view with the mighty Yosemite clearly visible.
