Yes, bizarre but true. Farts, which were earlier “dangerous” only because of the embarrassment it caused in public, has now actually severely burned a woman mid-surgery at a university hospital in Tokyo. The woman, aged 30, was undergoing a laser operation for her cervix, which then ignited the intestinal gas she passed during her surgery.
Her waist and legs have suffered severe damage and her current condition is unknown. An external committee that was set up to look in for the cause of the fire which was then expected to be due to “human error”, looked into the incident and surprisingly found that no flammable materials were present in the vicinity and that the instruments was effective during the surgery.
“When the patient’s intestinal gas leaked into the space of the OR, it ignited with the irradiation of the laser, and the burning spread, eventually reaching the surgical drape and causing the fire,” the report said.
The “fart” is a combination of carbon dioxide, oxygen, nitrogen, hydrogen, and methane, with most of the components being innocent, hydrogen and methane render the gas flammable.
