Every Citizen is a Donor – France: The Donor Country

The law, which came into effect on January 01, 2017, makes every French citizen organ and tissue donors. The law also states that if one doesn’t wish to donate organ, then they can specifically withdraw after adding their names in the National Rejection Register.
the-lawBefore 2017, organ donation was considered only if the dying person made their preference for donation clear. If no wishes were stated, doctors would ask their relatives for their interest, and nearly 1/3rd refused, according to the Guardian.

“In the name of national solidarity, the principle of presumed consent was chosen. The law says that we are all donors of organs and tissues, unless we have expressed our refusal.” France’s biomedicine agency wrote on its website.
