Indian dance forms are comprised of 8 beautiful classical dances. All of these dance forms belong to different regions of India. These listed dance forms are recognized Indian classical dances. All of these dance forms possess diversity in styles, costumes, and expressions. With all that these dance forms do have a link with their respective regions.
Indian Dance Forms
1. Bharatnatyam
This dance form is originated in Tamil Nadu. Initially, Bharatnatyam is an expression of Hindu religious themes with the spirituality of Shaivism, Vaishnavism, and Shaktism.
2. Kathak
“Kathak”, the word is derived from the Sanskrit term ‘Katha’ which means story. So, this dance form usually represents a story through dance postures. It belongs to northern Indian dance form.
3. Kathakali
It is another story telling dance form which is unaware of its root but it is believed that it belong to Kerala. This dance form is a detailed dance form enriched with colorful costumes and heavy makeup.
4. Kuchipudi
Kuchipudi was originated in the state of Andhra Pradesh. It is a religious art which is hugely knitted around the Hindu god Krishna and is oriented onto Vaishnavism tradition.
5. Manipuri
Manipuri dance is very well known with Jagoi. This dance form is named after the Indian state, Manipur. The Jagoi dancers emphasize more on hand and upper body gestures.
6. Mohiniattyam
This is another dance form which belongs to Kerala. This is based on Mohini, mythical enchantress avatar of Lord Vishnu. It is all about her feminine powers that helped her to prevail over evil.
7. Odissi
As the name suggests Odissi is that dance form which is dedicated particularly to Lord Vishnu who is referred as Jagannath.
8. Sattriya
This is dance form belongs to the eastern state, Assam. This dance form combines the aesthetic and the religious beliefs through dance and drama.
