There was this time in late 1990s, near to end of last millennium, where the song, ‘School Chale Hum’,was aired every morning on radio, TV, and every channel to inspire students to go to school- some of us used to wait impatiently to hear the song, mostly because it had a catchy tune, while for the rest of us, it was the most annoying song, especially when a elder started nagging! But school being school, we all had to go.
Durga Kami, a 68-year-old man from a small village Syangja, in Kathmandu aspired to be a school teacher when he was a boy, but being surrounded by poverty, sadly, he couldn’t do anything. Until one day, when he decided he wouldn’t regret and to combat his loneliness, after death of his wife, he decided to go to school. At 68-years, Kami is now in the tenth grade of Shree Kala Bhairab higher secondary school, which he attends 6 days a week. Kami started at Kaharay primary school where he learnt to read and write with the seven and eight year olds before leaving after finishing grade five with the 11-year-olds.
