Mark Watson, a retail manager developed a painful red rash on his leg – because he’s allegedly allergic to his brand new iPhone. He was excited like many others when he bought this impressive piece of technology, but was worried when he started developing rashes on his left thigh which then started to spread and became itchy and painful.
He tried various OTC creams from pharmaceutical shops, but had to visit his General Physician when the rash became lumpy.
Mark was then astonished to be told that he was actually allergic to the nickel present in his new mobile; he said: “You don’t expect a product by Apple to give you a rash and you just don’t expect to be allergic to your phone.I have never in my life had an allergic reaction to nickel, and before this it was a metal I associated with cheap jewelry. I just think it’s wrong that this could even happen.”
Baffled Mark contacted Apple who he said recognized the issue, but did not offer him a new phone or compensation.
“When I spoke to Apple they said it would have been mentioned in their terms and conditions but I don’t believe it is.When I searched on their website for ‘nickel’ nothing came up. I think they need to address this.”
Apple has not commented on the allegations.
Last year, however, a study was published in the U.S. journal Pediatrics suggesting an increase in nickel allergies in children which could be due to laptops and phones, including the i Pad.
