Skin types are not the same. What works on one skin, may not work on other- this is a tried & tested rule on various cosmetics. Some skin needs only minimal nourishment, while others require constant attention round the clock. Dry skins are especially problematic in winters, when they start flaking and hurting due to lack of moisture. Use of soaps is one of the primary cause that causes dry skin, and this is even true in the case of using moisturizing soaps- use of shower gels is the only option that remains in these cases.
Even the use of face washes sometimes renders the skin extreme dry, that even after applying moisturizer, they tend to go dry after some time. The trick is to use the face wash such that it only removes the oil and dirt, but doesn’t lather up much that it even soaks out the essential oils produced by the skin.
Extra nourishment never harms the skin, and before going out the various stores, try using the products from your kitchen.
The most important tips in caring for dry skin are:
Keep baths or showers short with warm water or normal water. Do not use hot water.
Try avoiding soaps and try using shower gels or use as little soap as possible. Use only a mild cleanser for your face and avoid aggressive scrubbing.
Avoid bathing frequently in the day, especially with harsh soaps, as it may contribute to dry skin.
Try mild scrubs, as it helps in scrubbing off the dry and flaky skins.
Apply moisturizer immediately after patting the skin dry; probably within 10 minutes of bathing.
Home remedies:
1. Coconut or Jojoba Oil treatment:
Massage your skin with coconut oil or jojoba oil every night before going to sleep for about 2-3 weeks continuously to observe a change dramatically in the skin. Always remember to moisturize without fail.
2. Using Avocado & Honey skin mask:
Make a smooth paste of avocado, add honey to it, to make a smooth consistency and apply it to your face. Use this mask twice a week and then moisturize.
3. Glycerine:
Mix glycerine with either lime juice or rose water and apply onto dry areas of the skin and leave over night.
4. Use bath oils and/or moisturizer at least twice a day to avoid dry skin.
5. Keep drinking water throughout the day and do not forget it- even if you are not thirsty, sip in some water- either in the form of fruit juices, or fruits or flavoured water.
6. Eat foods that are rich in proteins and fibres. Avoid alcohol and caffeine as they cause the skin to lose fluids.
