We tend to store almost every food in our fridges thinking it prolongs shelf lives of those foods. Although it does prolong but sometimes it is more harmful that useful. Here is a list of such foods you are not to refrigerate.
1. Bread:
Bread should be out on the counter because the fridge will dry out the bread very quickly. Generally, the bread that should be sliced and ready to be eaten and the remaining bread should be frozen by wrapping the bread in the freezer so it keeps its moisture. Also, when removing it from the freezer, let it thaw slowly and completely before you toast it or eat it.
2. Citrus Fruits:
Lemons, oranges and limes should be stored at room temperatures and on your kitchen counter. Cold air can damage the quality of these fruits. Be sure not to keep them too closely together as that can make them mold more quickly.
3. Coffee:
Coffee will lose its flavour when put in the refrigerator. Just like basil, it may take on some smells of other food in the fridge. You can although store excess coffee in your freezer.
4. Garlic:
In cold temperatures, garlic will start to sprout and mould as well.
5. Herbs:
Instead of refrigerating those herbs which kills it’s flavour, place them in a jar filled with water on your Kitchen counter- That way herbs will stay fresh and your kitchen will look beautiful as well
6. Honey:
Honey is one food that can never spoil or rot. There is no need to store it in a fridge. Refrigerating it will only cause it to crystallize.
7. Ketchup:
Ketchup can be stored in pantry even after it is opened because of high amounts of preservatives present. Refrigerating Ketchups can cause them to thicken than it is preferable.
8. Olive Oil:
In low temperatures the olive oil condenses into a harder consistency, similar to butter. So always place it in a dark and cool place.
9. Onions:
The moisture in onions makes them soft and eventually mouldy if you put them in the fridge. Instead, keep them in a dry, cool and dark place. However, keep potatoes and onions separate when placing them in that dark and cool place at your home. The reason for this is because when stored together- onions and potatoes deteriorate faster.
10. Potatoes:
Cold temperatures turn the starch of potato into sugar more quickly than you think. Try putting potatoes in a paper bag in a cool and dark place
11. Tomatoes:
Tomatoes when refrigerated will stop their ripening process which would affect their flavor and the cold air also makes tomatoes soft. Always place tomatoes in a basket or a bowl.
