Hopscotch= Rayuela | A Stream of Consciousness

We all must have read novels at some point of point in our lives. All the books are written in such a way that they make sense only when read from the beginning till the end- But, did you know there is also a book- Hopscotch, aka Rayuela in Spanish, which can be any given order, but it will still make sense! Amazing, isn’t ? It is also known as a counter novel and is a colossal and successful literary experiment ever. Written by an Argentine writer,  Julio Cortázar in Spanish in 1963 and translated in English in 1966 by translator Gregory Rabassa.

book-hopscotch1The novel is sporadic and has 155 chapters, with the last 99 being expendable, that fill in gaps of the main storyline, which initially first seem like random musings, but they then solve questions that arise in the first two parts of the book. The entire book is divided into 3 parts: From the Other Side; From This Side; From Diverse Sides.

You can read the book in any 2 ways:

  • book-hopscotch2
  • Regular, linear fashion or,
  • through hopscotching as per the chapters listed.

Either way, the book will make complete sense.,
