The Geological Survey of India (GSI) scientists have discovered a precious metal in the sea surrounding India. The metal’s discovery is considered significant due to its importance in the energy production.

Earlier in 2014, the presence of the resources was recognized first at Mangalore, Mannar Basin, Chennai, Andaman and Nicobar Islands and Lakshadweep.

The metal is known as lime mud consisting of phosphate, hydrocarbons, calcareous sediments , metalliferous deposits as well as micronodules. The scientists have even claimed that the deeper exploration may lead to the large treasure discovery.

The scientists were able to discover around 10,000 million tonnes of lime mud under the Exclusive Economic Zone of India by generating 1,81,025 square kilometers high resolution morphological data.

The operation has also confirmed the presence of phosphate sediment in Karwar, Mangalore as well as Chennai coast along with cobalt-rich ferromanganese crust at the Andaman sea as well as the micro manganese nodules around the sea of Lakshadweep.

The operation was carried out the in the research vessels, Samudra Ratnakar, Samudra Kaustubh as Samudra Saudikama. The primary objective of the mission was to explore the zones of favorable mineralization as well as to measure the marine mineral resources, according to the superintendent geologist of GSI, Ashish Nath.
