La toma’tina is an annual festival, held in the Valencian town of Buñol, Spain, in which participants involve in a tomato fight. Since 1945,it has been held on the last Wednesday of August, during the week of festivities of Buñol.
In 1957, demand for the popular festival led to its becoming official, with certain rules and restrictions. These rules have gone through
many modifications over the years. The rules are as follows:
1. The tomatoes have to be squashed before throwing to avoid injuries.
2. Nothing other than tomatoes is allowed to throw.
3. Participants have to make way for Trucks and Lorries.
4. After the second shot indicative of ending the tomato hurl, no tomatoes should be thrown.
Google honored the 70th anniversary of the largest food fight festival by creating the special google doodle, depicting La toma’tina.
About 175 tonnes of ripe tomatoes are used for this hour long fight festival and the town is hosed down minutes after the event ends as the whole town resembles red pulp and participants can use public showers to clean themselves up!
Many tourists from around the world travel to Valenciantown be a part of this huge food fight.
