Lee Kuan Yew, founder of modern Singapore who helped Singapore to transition from developing to one of the most developed in the world passed away on Monday, 23rd March, 2015. He was 91 years old.
He was the country’s first and longest serving prime minister and had guided Singapore through a traumatic split with Malaysia in 1965. He helped transform then a sleepy port city into a global trade and finance centre.
Lee was feared for his authoritarian tactics. He was known for his efficient, unsentimental, incorrupt, inventive, forward-looking and pragmatic nature.
His leadership was sometimes criticized for suppressing freedom, but he succeeded in what he wanted to achieve. Singapore became an international business and financial centre and was admired for low level of corruption.
Leaders from all over the world have expressed their condolences on Lee’s demise.
