1. GBT, Switzerland:
World’s longest train tunnel, NEAT Gotthard Base Tunnel, that will cross the Alps in Switzerland, is in progress and will be fully operational by the end of 2016. It is being built near the town of Sedrun. The length of this tunnel is 57 Kms.
2. Seikan Tunnel, Japan:
The Seikan tunnel in Japan is the deepest rail tunnel in the world, connecting the Hokkaido and Honshu islands. The tunnel is built 100 metres below the seabed. It was opened in the year 1988. The length of the tunnel is 53.85 Kms
3. Channel Tunnel, UK:
Channel tunnel is the longest undersea tunnel in the world, connecting Folkestone in the UK to Coquelles in France. The tunnel won the Global Engineering ‘Century Award’ and is UK’s first high-speed railway line. It is 50.5 Kms in length
4. Guadarrama Rail Tunnel, Spain:
Guadarrama is the longest twin-tube rail tunnel in Spain and the fourth longest in the world. The tunnel is dug through Sierra de Guadarrama mountain range and has an emergency room located in the middle of tunnel which can accommodate up to 1,200 people. The length of this tunnel is 28.4 Kms.
5. Lotschberg Base Tunnel, Switzerland:
The Lotschberg Base Tunnel cuts through the Alps of Switzerland. It is the world’s longest land tunnel and is 34.57 Kms in length.
6. Taihang Tunnel, China:
Taihang Tunnel is the longest mountain railway tunnel in China and was built to allow the Shitai Passenger Railway to cross the Taihang Mountains which cuts the travel time from almost six hours to one hour. The left track is 27,839 mts long and the right track is 27,848 mts long.
