Padma Awards was instituted in 1954, Padma Awards are declared every Republic Day and have 3 categories- Padma Shri, which is the Fourth Degree Honour and is given for Distinguished Service; Padma Bhushan, Third Degree Honour and is given for Distinguished Service Of A High Order and Padma Vibhushan, Second Degree Honour and given for Exceptional And Distinguished Service; to recognize work of any distinction in all fields of activities/disciplines, such as Art, Literature and Education, Sports, Medicine, Social Work, Science and Engineering, Public Affairs, Civil Service, Trade and Industry etc. All persons without distinction of race, occupation, position or sex are eligible for these awards.
