Dal Tadka is one of the most popular dal recipes. Basically, dal tadka are cooked lentils, which are lastly tempered with oil or ghee, fried spices, and coriander. It’s rich and appetizing flavor makes it suitable to be served with an array of Indian Flat Bread or Rice.

Ingredients

for the dal:

1 cup toor dal

½ inch ginger, crushed

1 onion, finely chopped

1 tomato, finely chopped

2 tsp garlic, crushed

1 tsp turmeric powder

1 tsp red chili powder

few coriander leaves, chopped

1 tsp coriander powder

salt to taste

for the tempering / tadka:

2 tsp ghee or clarified butter

1 tsp mustard seeds

1 tsp cumin seeds / jeera

3 red chilies, dried

pinch of asafoetida / hing

½ tsp red chili powder

½ tsp garam masala powder

few curry leaves

Direction

to make dal tadka:

1.Pressure cook 1 cup of toor dal in 4 cups of water for 40 minutes.

2.Heat ghee in a non-stick pan and saute onions till they turn golden brown.

3.Add crushed garlic and ginger.

4.Saute for a minute.

5.Add chopped tomatoes and cook until tomato release oil.

6.Add red chili powder and turmeric powder.

7.Add coriander powder and fry without burning the spices.

8.Add in cooked dal and mix well with onion tomato gravy.

9.Add salt to taste.

10.Adjust the consistency by adding required water.

11.Add chopped coriander leaves.

tadka for dal tadka recipe:

12.In a pan pour ghee, mustard seeds, cumin seeds, red chili powder, curry leaves, hing and dried red chili and let them splutter.

13.Pour the tadka on dal.

14.Serve with steamed rice or Indian Flat Bread.
