In 2013–14, Indian Rail carried around 8.425 billion passengers’ annually or more than 23 million passengers daily (roughly half of which were suburban passengers) and 1050.18 million tons of freight in the year. With increase in number of people opting to travel by train, it becomes necessary to increase the facility.

Highlights of Railway budget 2015-16 are as follows.
