According to Ayurveda, fever is an imbalance of the pitta (fire), vata (air) and kapha (phlegm) energies. Stress, lifestyle disorders or improper food intake cause the imbalance, leading to a dysfunctional system of digestion, which causes the microbes in the small and large intestine putrefy and spread to the entire body, thereby causing the imbalance.
Ayurveda claims that, low fevers are healing as they help burn the toxins in your body, while high fevers must be treated by relieving the strain on the digestive system by use of fruits, herbs and soups, containing tulsi, ginger, black pepper,
Fevers, with symptoms like burning forehead, high fever, bad-smelling perspiration and usually loose motions and nausea, requires sponging with cold water, with few drops of peppermint oil. Offer fruit such as musk melon, sweet lime and drink lemon water with sugar.
While fevers with symptoms that include racing pulse, great thirst, body aches and pains, and fluctuating body temperatures, requires lot of water and warm soups.
Fevers which include symptoms of cold, cough, heaviness and blocked sinuses, indicates that the upper respiratory system is affected. Drink lots of water, sip a decoction of tulsi, ginger and long pepper three or four times a day. Avoid heavy foods like bread, roti, rice, milk, curd and ghee.
