India is now home to the world’s largest solar power plant, a 648-megawatt (MW) field facility in the southern part of the country. India, with a goal of having 20 giga-watts (GW) of solar power capacity to be installed by 2022, has quite large solar projects in mind which will be built over the span of next 7 years.
One should remember that the planned solar power projects, which have grown in size and necessity, takes years to pass through design, approval, funding and then building, but isn’t the wait worth it? The new solar power plant, funded by the Adani Group, in Tamil Nadu covers 10 square kilometres and consists of 2.5 million discrete solar modules and is estimated to generate electricity to power about 150,000 homes.
The solar panels are cleaned using a robotic system powered by the solar panels, which maximizes the power output. With this plant in function, India now has 10 GW of fixed solar power capacity, putting them halfway to their 2022 goal that will see 60 million homes powered by the sun.
The solar power plant in Tamil Nadu, became the largest solar power plant after displacing the Topaz Solar Farm in California, with capacity of 550 MW. Indian government’s ambitious plan is to power 60 million homes by the sun by the year 2022; & aims to produce 40% of its power from non-fossil fuels by 2030.
