A cover story published in a Tamilian bi-weekly alleging that the women’s leggings was provocative and was portraying those who wear it in a bad light. It has kicked off a super-storm, especially in the virtual world as the issue termed it ‘crossing the limits’ of acceptable dress code. It was accompanied by several snaps of women on the road and pillion riding, all cropped suggestively to further drive in the message that leggings were provocative. Soon after the weekly hit the news-stands, a controversy erupted over the moralistic tone of the article
There is even an online petition, Change.org asking the magazine to apologize for the article and it received more than 2500 petitions within few hours.
DMK member Kanimozhi came out with a statement alleging that to be “moral policing masquerading as journalism. It is a classic case of objectification of women.”
