Do you know why babies smile? According to U.S. News & World Report, research conducted at the University of California, had a programmed robot to act like a baby based on a previous study that observed the face-to-face interactions of 13 pairs of mothers and infants younger than four months. In that study, 11 of 13 babies showed signs of intentional smiling.
The study suggests that babies attempt to make the person interacting with them to smile back. “I used to wonder if my daughter was trying to communicate with me when she was an infant and smiled,” the lead researcher tells the San Diego Union-Tribune, and this study shows “it might not have just been wishful thinking on my part. Babies are very goal-oriented.”
