A Banyan tree located in Landi Kotal army cantonment, Pakistan is chained to shackles and has been like this for over 100 years with a board reading ‘I am under arrest.’ It was chained in 1898 by an intoxicated British officer, who thought that the tree was moving behind him, and hence arrested “it”.
Although, some people believe that it was a way of threatening the tribal people. A resident of the army cantonment, ‘Through this act, the British basically implied to the tribesmen that if they dared act against the Raj, they too would be punished in a similar fashion.”
