Hajime Narukawa, of Keio University, Graduate School of Media and Governance created a more accurate design of the world map, which won the grand prize from Japan’s Good Design Award.
Designing a 2-D structure of world is a herculean task, primarily because of the spherical shape of the earth. The AuthaGraph World Map, in an attempt to correct the “size” issues of the continents to correct these issues, in which Africa looks smaller than it really is and Antarctica and Greenland looks larger than actually is, have designed a more accurate world map using a different projection technique, which are angled in such a way that you can even gauze the distances between the continents.
The map is not laid flat as it commonly is; rather it is angled representing all oceans & continents and can be moulded into different shapes without the map losing its accuracy.
AuthaGraph also sells paper assembly kits which can be folded from a sphere to cone and also to a flat map.
